In case you haven't heard about it... Google Desktop Search is a nifty little addon that is available straight from google.com. It indexes your files, history, chats and other things so that they can be searched using the same engine that is used on google.com. Important to note that your info does not get stored on the web, this addon is downloaded and installed and ran locally on your machine. Kind of a neat program. Give it a shot and never lose a document or email again.
